Closed Group Therapy

Closed Group Therapy for Drug and Alcohol Recovery

Unlike other outpatient drug and alcohol treatment programs, our treatment groups are not open. In other words, once the group is formed, no new patients are admitted into the group. This Closed Group therapy approach fosters trust, accountability, and friendship. Many of our clients remain friends as a result of the lasting bond that is created during group experiences. The closed group is often the first strong support system for our clients beginning the process of recovery.

Four Phases of Recovery

Phase I: Intensive Outpatient Program

1. Group Sessions: Monday – Friday 9-12 noon or 6-9 pm for 5 weeks.

2. Individual Counseling Sessions: Four individual counseling sessions within the five week program.

Phase II: Transition Program

1. Group Sessions: Twice a week from 9-11 am or 6-8 p.m. for 12 weeks.

2. Individual Counseling Sessions: One to two times a month.

Phase III: Weekly Recovery Program

1. Group Sessions: Once a week from 9-11 am or 6-8 p.m. for 12 weeks.

2. Individual Counseling Sessions: Once a month.

Phase IV: Monthly Recovery Program

1. Group Sessions: Once a month from 9-11 am or 6-8 p.m. for five months.

2. Individual Counseling Sessions: Once a month.

Benefits of Closed Group Therapy

  1. Accountability – One of the biggest benefits of Closed Group Therapy is the accountability a group setting provides. Individuals are encouraged to share their successes and setbacks. Members of the group offer encouragement and support.

  2. Be a part of something bigger – In treating drug and alcohol abuse, people who engage in group therapy can feel like they are connected to something bigger than themselves. Members of the group can feel like part of a team. They feel special and valued.

  3. Learn from others – Closed Group Therapy allows members to learn from the experiences of others. Members are able to look objectively at mistakes and successes of individuals within the group.
